Thoughts on censorship here on DA

Fri Dec 4, 2009, 9:08 AM
Ok. This is not about DA as such or the people behind it, but it's some thoughts on how some users perform censorship on their audience, which is the rest of us here...

Several time during my time here on DA, I've observed how some artists, mainly photographers, for some obscure reason, seem to want to dictate to their audience (me and you), what we're supposed to think or at least express - or what we're allowed to express our opinions about... I'll just mention one of those artists, not to point at him specifically, but solely since he's the llatest artist I noticed doing this, and that inspired me to write this journal entry. I'm talking about John Peri, who specifically dictate his audience, that we're not to make any kind of comment about his nude models bodies, but we're only allowed to comment on his pictures for their artistic and photographic merits. If we don't obey his rules, he'll delete our comments or at least hide them.

The funny thing to me is that the model and the photographer both rely heavily on their right to express themselves through their common art project (the picture of the naked body), but as soon as it comes to other peoples opinions, they themselves become the performers of arts most feared and hated enemy: Censorship...

I'm not talking here about using offensive language or maybe making seksual suggestions about a nude models body... Sometimes, as is the case with John Peri, it's making any kind of comment about a models body, that seems to be a problem... Telling him or her that she has a great body is an offense...

As I see it, this presents a rather absurd problem... The photographer makes a shot of a nude model, and they agree to post that picture on the internet, showing her naked body to the world, but all of a sudden it's a problem and it's obviously for some reason offensive to form opinions of her body - or at least express that opinion - even though the naked body has already been put into full public display...

I can't help but to think: "How dare you?"... How dare you use the previlege of your freedom to express yourselves the way you like and want and at the same time misuse that previlege to dictate others what they're supposed to think or at least, what they're supposed to think anything about? Ok, they're allowed to think as long as they keep those thoughts to themselves, while you're allowed to express yourselves as you like in full publicity? Shame on you... Shame on you and your ugly censorship and selfrighteousness... This is worse and more ugly than pure censorship, because you should know better than that... As long as we live in a world with rights a previleges that belongs to everybody, you're never entitled to use previleges, that you want to take away from anybody else... If you deny others their right to use these previleges, you loose the right to use them too... Freedom of expression? That doesn't just belong to artists and politicians and journalists... It belongs to everybody...
